Current project

The Historicity of Nature in 19th Century North American Landscape Painting

Landscape’s rise to a highest-ranking genre of painting in nineteenth-century North America, capable of affecting the emergence of a national consciousness, is partially due to its ability to render the world as imbued with history. The thesis examines artistic strategies and visual idioms that articulate a historical relation to the world within the depiction of landscape and nature. This hopes to contribute to understanding landscape‘s cultural, political and ideological function.
