Current project

Epistemologies of the Auditive in the late 18th Century

The project investigates ‘Epistemologies of the Auditive’ in the late 18th century as forms of knowledge that not only address the auditive as their theoretical basis but also take it as their medial condition to communicate knowledge. In this context I look at the theory-practice nexus of performative practices such as public lectures or the so called movement of literary declamation. It becomes obvious that ‘Epistemologies of the Auditive’ are intertwined with the visual in a number of ways: images and image-related phenomena (such as Chladnis ‘Klangfiguren’) make the ephemeral forms of auditive knowledge describable and in this way open to discourse.
