Can stochastic series generate dialectical images? World Models, World Pictures, and Generative AI

Critical historical recollection is composite—a collective, mediated process that resists resolution into singular, coherent narratives (once likened by Walter Benjamin to a “dialectical image”). What happens when these processes become the objects of calculation, prediction, and probability, as seen in recent technologies of generative AI? Drawing on the speaker’s ongoing collaborations with photographers Klara Källström and Thobias Faldt, this talk examines the worlds and histories that lend themselves to representation in recent techniques of generative AI.
