The visual splendor of late medieval winged altarpieces that strikes us today in churches and museums was for the late medieval contemporary available only in a different context. In rather dim church spaces darkened by stained glass windows and behind an opaque choir screen, the altarpieces were probably more vaguely supposed than seen. In my project questions of spatial context, liturgy and social function will be connected to media aesthetically findings to thematize both – functional and astatically – aspects of these complex image systems in connection to their space. My focal question is: How and under which spatial and liturgical circumstances can late medieval altar pieces on the high altar generate visibility?
