In 2012–18 Zumrad worked as a research assistant at the Völkerkundemuseum vPSt in Heidelberg. She is currently a member of the eikones Graduate School and the ERC-Project Global Horizons in Pre-Modern Art.

The dissertation project deals with early medieval wall paintings in Central Asia (5th—8th centuries) focusing on material representations as well as material and immaterial interrelations between the artistic media of painting and textile. Based on these observations it addresses questions of image making, image circulation, modes of seeing, representation, and reception in pre-Islamic Central Asia more broadly.
