Establishing Law, Imagining Justice: Juridical Visual Culture in the Medieval Holy Roman Empire (working title)
The legal culture of the medieval Holy Roman Empire involved images and artefacts in a myriad of ways. Spanning from the 13th up to the early 16th century, and covering the entire German-speaking world, my dissertation project is the first major attempt to explore the central role of visual culture in the medieval juridical sphere from an art historical perspective, addressing such questions as: why did law need objects? How did this abundant visual culture – which included artworks, monuments, objects and performative gestures – shape the experience of law? And what can be learned about law in the Middle Ages, a foundational phase for many contemporary legal institutions, from the components of its juridical visual culture that still survive?
