Raymundo Stadelmann studied Media Studies and Art History at the University of Basel, where he worked as a student assistant at the Chair of Art Theory (Prof. Dr. Markus Klammer). He completed his MA with a media-archaeological thesis on the chrono-photogrammetric studies of German physiologists Wilhelm Braune (1831-1892) and Otto Fischer (1861-1916). Since autumn 2025, he has been a member of the eikones Graduate School and works on the history and theory of photographic media under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Estelle Blaschke.
The PhD project examines the rise of photogrammetric and LiDAR-based 3D imaging devices within the framework of operational (in)visuality. Using photographic measurement, point cloud technology scans natural and urban environments and transforms them into computable models operating in networked media. The central hypothesis is that point cloud representations exemplify an ongoing shift in visual media from depiction towards computation. While point cloud imaging is increasingly employed in environmental monitoring, urban mobility, archaeology, and art restoration, its aesthetic, epistemological, and ideological implications remain underexplored. The project examines not only how point cloud technology is used in scientific imaging contexts, but also how it impacts visual cultures as these devices move beyond the laboratory into cultural and artistic contexts. In doing so, the project aims to contribute to ongoing debates in Image Studies, Media Theory, and the History of Science and Technology.
